Take a look at this guy's render on a house with porch using the exact same env map...

almost no shadow at all... it looks pretty good though.

if i turn the sun way down and amp up the daylight, i could probably get something very similar.

true! but I was surprised to see this using the same env map, and being a house with a porch too!

Another thing you can try since you have Photoshop is, save the render (no need to stop the render) to an hdr image as oppose to png or jpg. This will save the raw data in high dynamic (not restricted to 0..1 or 0..255), and then you can use whatever other tools like Photoshop or some tone mapping software to really do some serious stuff to it.

Looks neat! are you going to put interior walls and furniture too?

Maybe the problem with the sun/sky is too much shininess on the floor and ceiling and it reflect too much the dark areas? Have you tried it with no shine at all see if it brighten the porch?

The interior walls are there (just white at the moment).
they are washed out though because I've pumped up the exposure gama, and other settings. might try doing it in Photoshop with the HDRI image instead. I get different results.

We don't plan on rendering it at night, but we wanted to illuminate the porch and see how much light we need to put on it so we have an idea what to do during the day.

What you can do is create a light the length of the porch, say, 1 inch by 30 feet, and put it at 4 feet above the floor (midway if your ceiling is at 8 feet), then copy/paste it 1/64" below itself and rotate it so it shine down, so you'll have 2 lights back to back lighting up the whole porch! I've never tried that
