Have you tried the Fur plugin? It does allow for bent grass blades.

The way you have it now is only best viewed from the ground, not from the air. But the Fur plugin generate actuall grass blades, viewable from any heights and directions.

Let me work on something for you, I'll make you a PNG just like the one you've been using, but much smaller, and with bent grass blades, and then you can populate your grass with it, I'll be right back...

ok, try this one, take a look at the screen shot (clik it to view it big) and use the same settings for your Fur plugin as I used. I've also included the Sketchup file with the 6'x6' area with the grass and material...

Ok I tried it but it didn't work. :( I have the file attached! what did I do wrong? I am going to go with that way since it will look better if you are looking in top view which is one of the views my PM needs. Thank you soooooooo much for your help!

oh, your model is not to scale with real life! For examples, the entrance to the building is only 4 inches tall, it should be like 10 feet tall instead. That's why the grass blades doesn't work because the blades are 4 inches tall as well. Let me see if I can correct this by scalling your model by x30...

The grass did not show when viewed this high up in the air. So my suggestion is to use a more realistic material for the grass.

Here are many of them...

Ok I have another question. I tried to load in one of the google images and it just ends up becoming a lot of square pieces of grass. What do i need to do so it doesnt show like that? Also if I were going to use closer images would I want to use the fur grass for those views and then just use the grass material for the top view that I need?

Thanks!!!!

ok, search Goolge for 'seamless grass texture' so that you don't get the square. I forgot to mention that before.

Yes, for the close up views from the ground, use the Fur plugin, otherwise use a seamless grass texture. But make sure your model is to scale with real life, right now, it is 30x smaller!

ok slope grass is working so far.

I have a question dealing with the enviroment maps that you can place in there. Do you think it would be possible to do that with my model? I have some areas that are just going to be tree lines. do you know of any enviroment maps that include trees with fall colors in it?

Thanks,
Melissa

Yes you can. Take a look at this site, http://www.openfootage.net/?tag=hdri I like the 6th one on the second page (they are all free), and I think it would be nice in your model. not fall looking, but I didn't fand any. You need to download the biggest one, like 100mb+, 10000x4000 to get a nice look. Anything small is just not good.

You may search google for "HDRI environment maps" but most of the good ones are not free :(

You can look here too.. (i love sharing this link as it's so good)
http://www.cgtextures.com/

Nature -> Grass -> anyting labeled "Set tile" should work.

free materials are smaller in size, large maps require a premium membership.
they do not include normal maps... But i've learned how to create my own.
But that's a discussion for a different day.

Great rendering in the other posting and thank you for the link. It is a pretty nice source. Are you a premium member yourself? Also where can you share your way of creating normal maps for any texture?
Thanks again and great work.

There is also http://www.filterforge.com/ plugin for Photoshop. It makes normal maps easily, and all the free normal maps on their site were made by it.

I like the cgtextures site Dave! But some of the HDRI are $30 each! ouch

CGtextres now has a yearly membership fee, and they moved the HDRI stuff off to a new site.

but I've never bought anything from them anyway. I use free textures.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!!!! I have to say I like that grass texture I might have to try that one. As for maps don't know if I can get my computer to load with those :( I had major crashing issues yesterday :/ I might have to end up using the IT guy's computer to do all of this. I work for a company that usually doesn't do this type of thing so we don't have the strongest computers :(

Hey, thought id post this as it seemed somewhat relevant :)

still a work in progress of course.

Did this using the methods described earlier using an image for grass. It really ate my machine up having it displayed. It was very CPU hungry. Since sketchup is still a single-core single-process 32 bit application it's hardly taxing my system, but maxing out.

I was thinking about a better way to do this. Can you simply use different size? The original was set for a small patch, but if you make it much wider, you wouldn't have to use as many of them. Maybe I'll go try that...

So I am having a better time with things. My offices IT guy helped me out!!!

I have been able to update the model since I last posted. Its getting better. The grass is still sort of an issue lol. I am currently using a really dark grass texture and my boss wants it to be lighter since the grass at the site is not in the greatest shape. So I am trying to find that! Here is what the dark texture is doing. Attached is my first attempt at rendering it.

Dknight- Thanks again for the CGtextures link. I found a good wood chip texture for the random landscaped garden at the end of the creek.

Thanks again for all of the help!!!

Thank you guys both. This would be quite helpful as soon as I find some time reading them. Still trying to make sense of a set of CAD drawings for that huge mansion. I just default rendered a partial basement level.
