Fireflies

Post by daleblack1961 »

Thanks so much for your help with the grass. I am very happy with the results I'm getting. I purchased a Peter Guthrie hdr sky and I really like the colors I'm getting however when I render I get a lot of fireflies (see attached at about 600 samples). It takes about 10,000 samples before you no longer see them (see attached). With other hdr skies I don't get them. The sky I am using is extremely bright and I have to set intensity at .16. Is there a setting or technique I could use to alleviate the fireflies.

The reason why you get those fireflies is because the sun in the hdr is super bright, and when rays are randomly hitting the sun, the intensity at that pixel jump very high. What you should so is use the Sun + Environment Map + Direct Illumination in the Illumination setting, not just the environment map alone, then in the Sun & Sky settings, click on the button "Set from environment map" and click on the center of the sun in the rendered view, you may have to rotate the model in order to see the sun, and also, make sure "Follow camera" is checked in the Environment map settings. Doing it this way will make sure that the sun is not queried in random, being small, the probabilities that a random ray hit the sun is low, hence the fireflies.

Thank you very much. That did it. I had a great rendering in about 2000 samples (About 1 hour)

I greatly appreciate your prompt and helpful responses.

Have done both of these this afternoon with the lighting you suggested.

Yes it is the default setting in V4. The key was getting the right texture which Raylectron support helped with. The textures are in the topic below.
