V4 or V3 how to activate GPU?

Post by makwell24 »

I have the build.

i5 3570k
msi z77a G45
8gb ram
and my gpu is
Sapphire R7 260x OC 2gb
896 stream processors

it seems that I can only render through my cpu. in V3.. and V4 it does not. any way to make it work?

when I used V3 GPU + CPU... I see it saying 4 threads. that's why I assume it is using the cpu.

the GPU+CPU v3 utilize both and the only way to know if it is using the GPU is to start a render and look in the Lighting setting see if the GPU setting is enabled. In v4, the way to know is simple, it works or it doesn't work.

Your video card seem to be compatible, but, you need to update your video driver to include OpenCL, do not use the Microsoft driver, use the AMD Catalyst driver instead and all should work fine. Try it with a small model first to make sure it works, because your video card only has 2GB maximum and some of it is reserved for your display monitor etc.

ok I clicked render and see the lighting settings... I see the GPU acceleration.. and it is faded and I cannot pick it.
so it seemed that I cannot use my GPU? can I put the monitor to the On board DVI... but then use the Graphics card for rendering to retain its 2gb memory?

If the GPU is disabled it means it's not detecting a valid OpenCL driver, so even if you plug your monitor to the onboard video it will make no difference. Have you tried with a simple model? like just a cube see if it will be enabled? have you installed the latest Catalyst driver?

in v3 you can not select the video card to use, but in the upcoming v4.08 you will be able to do that so you may plug your monitor to the onboard video and utilize the video card for the render as you suggested.
