Realistic water?

How do you guys go about to create realistic water (pool, lake etc) ?
The only online info I've found seem to revolve around Vray unfortunately.

Free or paid-for plugs or tuts, point me in the right direction :)

Oh, and I love what you've done to the website.

Many thanks!

It's very simple, use a solid color image as the texture and use a normal map with ripples or waves (I have attached both to my post)

1. For lakes, ocean etc. where you do not want to see inside, set the face material to shine = 10 or more, load the white image and then load the normal map image. Change the color to black or very dark color or your choice, zero transparency, adjust the size of the texture so the ripples looks good. Change the bump level so it's the way you like.

2. Swimming pool where you want to see inside. Make sure the material is assigned to both side (front and back) of the face. Set transparency to 100, set the face material to shine = 10 or more, load the white image and then load the normal map image, adjust the size of the texture so the ripples looks good. Change the bump level so it's the way you like.

If you like, I can make you a video?

Glad you like the new site :)

No video needed, followed your advice and it worked like a charm. Much appreciated!

I've made a video tutorial on an alternative way to create water using the Artisan plugin for SketchUp...
