Portals
Re: Portals
Hi,
First, you have only one side of the face set as a portal, it should be on front and back, better yet, group it and set the portal material to the group not the faces and leave the faces as Default material. Even better yet, you no longer need to create portals in Grain Free mode, they are automatic, as long as you have windows or transparent faces.
I notice you don't have a roof, you should have one and use Section Planes if you wish the camera to see through the roof. The same for walls etc.

Re: Portals
First, remove the Portals, no need for them. Second, convert your glass material to Glass because you have them as blue and 50% transparent, that's going to let in less than 50% of the outside light in. This is what I did and rendered it for 30 sec...

Re: Portals
Hi, sorry to be a pain with portals but I am not getting the result I expect. I have changed all the glass to "glass" and have removed the portals. I am not getting the clean Airy bounce that I would expect. I must be doing somthing wrong but I cannot figure out what it is. I have attached the rof file an image with only 70 passes. and the skp file. I can get some improvment with Gamma correction.

Re: Portals
the ROF alone will not work as it need the texture folder and the cfg file. You also sent me the Kitchen only so I can't use that. However, by the look of the sun, it looks like it's very low, like late afternoon, almost sunset, so it's notmal that it isn't as bright as it would be at noon. Also, what is your ground color? I would make it white not green as in Sketchup, or use the White Env Map.
Are you glass (windows) 100% transparent?
You should use Exposure not Gamma.

Re: Portals
Hi and thanks for the tips I just want to Clarify a few things:
When I set the time of day until now I have always tried to cast sun highlights into the room so I would do early morning, are you saying I should do later so the sun it stronger? and I get more "bounce in the room? Does that change the sun intensity?
If I am not getting enough bounce (light airyness) in the building I can increase the lightness in the building by increasing Sun intensity?
Use white background for sky and ground in sketchup? that will help?
How many frames do you usually go to for a render?
If I habe long frame times hence long render times how much can I reduce the trace depth and how much will it reduce the quality?
Sorry for the questions but if these are answered I think it may help me and others:)
Have just updated my fireworks render
Oh I must point out I am not talking about the "firworks" render I am talking about in general

Re: Portals
The sun is not as strong at sunrise or sunset but that is not your problem with illumination. I see you have backdrop image outside the windows, they cast shadows, so, the face with the image, edit it in Raylectron Material Editor and select "Does not block direct light". Next, the back face should be 100% white and 100% transparent so the light can go though it and into the room.
You can also set the Sun Power in the Sun/Sky setting but again, the problem isn't the power of the sun. Try the above first, without any artificial lights on the inside. If it's still too dark, you can uncheck the Portals in the Illumination settings.
Do this and let me know how it goes? No worries about your questions, I like questions, it makes me understand the user and his needs.

Re: Portals
I forgot to answer one thing, the number of pass, for your model, between 150 to 400

Re: Portals
Thanks, I was editing whilst you were writing. I am not talikng about this render but in general. I am relitivly happy with this render. BTW the backdrop was alwaya a light emmetter this seems to work especially with this firework scene but I always do it to most for good effect.

Re: Portals
oh ok. In general, it's impossible to say because it all depend on how many artificial lights you have and the complexity of the model and the render resolution (1024x768 vs 2400x2000). If it's a simple bedroom with one light, just a few minutes render is enough on my old i7-2600 CPU, but models like yours, 150 to 300-400 passes should be the range. I don't go with that, I go with the changes from one pass to the next, if after 3-4 passes I don't see anything changing, it means it's too minimal for the eye to pick the change so I stop it and I'm done.
If your backdrop is an emitter, make sure you set the Beam Kind to None, not Smooth which is the default and you can also change the color which will not affect the image itself, only the emitting color, like bright white as oppose to the average color of the image which could be very dark and illuminate very little.
