How to show light through an object

Post by stevo1 »

Hi, I want to make a lamp with a fabric lamp shade. I want to put a spherical light emitter inside I want to keep the lamp shade looking opaque but softly glow at the same time and show as it would in a real lamp. Any ideas on what the best way would be to do that?

Hi,

First, make sure the material is the same for the front and back faces of the shade fabric, set the transparency to 30-60 and diffuse to 100. Here is a render of a shade I did, is this about what you're looking for? Mine maybe too transparent (I used 80) but you can play with the number, say, 30 if you don't want the light to shine through like mine.

it's a cube but I could have made it a sphere as well. The beam kind set to none, important in this case because it's not a directional light.
