The light intensity is multiplied by its area and the area adjustment add/sub from the original surface area of the emitter. If you have a small light and set the area adjustment to 0, it may illuminate similar to a flashlight, but if you make its area much larger, it will illuminate more like an area light, such as a large light in a kitchen ceiling (these double long bulbs). That is why we have an auto-set for it so it tries to get the best match to prevent flashlight kind of illumination. The larger the area, the softer and less dark shadows.
