Getting the shine on-Interior scenes

Post by GateGirl86 »

I'm having trouble creating a gloss effect on interiors. Namely walls and floors etc. For example walls painted in enamel will give a low shine. What I am getting is a grainy effect; yet with exterior scenes I don't have that issue.

That's typical for interiors like corner areas with no lights in the back to reflect from the shine. Like a shiny floor, if you look at it against a wall, there is no shine, but looking at it against a patio door for example, you can clearly see the shine. It all depends on the angle of view and what it's reflecting. You may want to reduce the diffuse and increase the shine (not the reflection) to have more shine, but again, what will it shine? the other walls which have no emitting surfaces, no contrast of their own, so the shine is still present but can't tell. Outdoor is different, a lot of bright areas to shine from.

I have the lights in the ceiling. Quite a few of them in fact covering the entire large area (its a crew mess on board a ship). What though is causing the 'graininess' you can see on the walls? That would normally be where you'd see a gloss/shine effect.

Think of shine as reflection but much less obvious, there is nothing to reflect because of the angle of view it can't really reflect the ceiling lights because of the angle of view. The grains are probably from the Diffuse setting, set it to zero and see what it actually reflects from the shine. What are the settings you use for the walls?

I'll give that a try. I'm not entirely sure what settings I used, I think though I just used the 'shiny' setting.

If you used the shiny setting, then it only uses the Sine and Diffuse.

It's looking really nice. The shines can't be shown too well because lights are all over, makes it more ambient. What are your illumination settings?

What I meant is the Illumination menu of the model, these settings.

As for the lights, why do you have them illuminate on both sides? Is that how they would be in real life?

Would you be able to show me with a screen cap? I'm sort of a little out of it lately....27 weeks pregnant lol

It wasn't working with the single setting, I was just experimenting I guess.

I'll check that on my next render. But I think all boxes were ticked except clouds.

For this interior rendering, Artificial Lights should be the only one checked, beside Direct Illumination, Grain Free and Real Shadows.
