On the Flight

Post by Okwa »

Ok, this has been a little experiment, not meant seriously. If I colour the nrml map of the sea wave material with a grass texture instead of a blue texture, can I adjust the "waves" so that I get a hilly landscape? Answer, Nope.
The first picture is the version with normal sea wave material. The second picture is the version in which I gave the sea wave material a grass texture. As you can see, you can't see anything. For fun I added some mountains as a background, I always wanted to try them out.

Oh yes,I forgot. The models are a C-83 "Ackadata" cargo aircraft of the Army (aka Marine Ground Corps) escorted by a flight of F-82 "Rume Shaar" multi-role fighters of the Air Force (aka Marine Air Corps) of the Intergalactic Union of Sovereign Planets. The aircraft are 1000 m (3281 feet) above sea level.
And the strange appearance of the C-83, that the bow is darker, is a texture error from Sketchup that I did not correct. Got a bit sick and the whole experiment was just a distraction for me. Troubleshooting, I don't have the nerve for that today.

First, WOW, you did a super work on the feeling they're actually moving. The God's ray are so well made.

Normal maps are just illusions, so it's limited on how much "bumps" you can produce, it doesn't add geometry.

One thing you can do is, for the grass texture, create a new one of 8x the size and tile this one into 64 squares. Then when you load it and load the normal map, the grass texture will look very small, so set the size to make to 8x larger, so will the normal map, except that now, the normal map will show hills instead of ripples.

I'm sorry that I'm only replying to you now. I had completely overlooked the fact that you had written a comment here.

Thanks for the tip. But here, for the first time, I only used the setting option "Textured ground". So I didn't make the floor. But I will try your method. I still have the scene. :D

Not a problem :)

You still need to select "Textured ground" in order to change the image and normal map for it.

Works quite well.
This was just a quick test, I want to emphasise that. I just put the settings together quickly and only 20 samples were rendered. Therefore, the image as a whole does not look very good. Nevertheless, the effect on the ground is good to see. Many thanks again for the tip. :salute

Looks good, and you can also search for normal maps online for one that is more hill like. There are so many out there.
