White water with default ground texture

Post by GateGirl86 »

Hi Michael,

I mentioned this late last year in regard to the render not producing the water effect with the default ground texture. This is what I am getting. I left this to run overnight to see if it would generate. It didn't.

ah, the camera is so far up from the ground that the water waves can no longer be seen. Change the color to pure white and for the ground color in Sun/Sky try pure black and pure white see which you like better. To see the waves, increase the Width by a lot until you see the waves.

So I've found that if you give your model any considerable altitude, the sea waves simply won't generate. The model, at least for me, needs to be much closer to zero (I have mine at 5m and that worked). I did however do a cheat version with PS. I'm not sure which looks better though.

I like the first one, it looks as if the speed of the ship is ripping the water. The other looks more real but the ship looks like in a standstill.

You can have the waves at high altitude, just magnify the wave, it's set to be a meter so that a person on the water can clearly see the waves. If your ship is a few hundred meters above, set the size of the texture to that much as well as opposed to 1 or 2, set it to 100, then 500, then 2000 see how it turns out. That's what I did with the one with the blue thrusters. Also, set the texture rotation to get the waves in the orientation you like.

Yes the first one was helped along with some PS manipulation to get that effect. But at least it worked. That was the issue I had with 2#, there is no sense of motion.

So then, I will try it again! At height! :D :salute

It looks like I'm getting close.

One question, how can I fix the water so that as it goes into the background towards the horizon it looks more realistic, rather than a repetitive pattern?

Change the Rotation to minimize the pattern because the loaded Normal Map is duplicated over the infinite area. Set the Bump level to 2 or even 1. Remove the Shine as well see if the IOR (Water) will handle the reflection and blend nicely.

With different settings. I also made the Ground (in Sun/Sky) more orange since the water is transparent.

that "thick brown stuff" is because you have the Turbidity too high and the Cutoff too low.

Double click the Turbidity (or any other settings) to reset it to its default of 2.2 then go into Performance mode to make any adjustment in the settings so it's faster to show. Turbidity at Default will not give you that look, that's extreme. What kind of look are you looking for?

Pink? Use the Color Filter, reduce the Green level?

I'm done with the mountains, and this is the final result. You will be able to set how it looks, size, texture etc.

Still working on getting the exhaust efflux right, I'll figure it out

Desert for me, just isn't quite there. I think I'll have to fiddle more with the settings. Mountain shadow done in PS.

The water scene is looking okay, although my shadows look suspect.

Very cool looking, I can't wait for the finals :)

For the desert sand, change the color and adjust the Bump level to maybe a bit lower and a bit of shine.

For the exhaust, make it all max then lower as needed.

Next version will have planets and moons, yes, you can add as many you like and the sun will also illuminate them. The ground is now the Earth, so if the earth blocks the sun rays to the moon, you'll have the real deal :)

Shadows from the mountains, well, they are so far away, like, at the end of the horizon, hence no shadow! The texture may make it look close but they aren't.
