Something different V: Again Star Wars

Post by Okwa »

:D Another Star Wars. This time my own variants of the legendary EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate. I made three variants at once. To be honest, I just tried different design concepts and in the end I couldn't decide which one to use. So I use, almost, all of my designs. Two other design concepts have been abandoned.
From front to back: an Imperial Nebulon C heavy frigate, a Nebulon D multi-purpose frigate used by all factions, including corporations and private security companies, and at the very back a Republic Nebulon E carrier frigate.
Conceptually, all three variants are used by all factions. Depending on the prevailing military doctrine and necessity, however, to varying degrees. In the Remnant Empire, for example, 80% of the Nebulon frigates used are of the C-variant and 20% of the E-variant, but practically not a single Nebulon frigate is of the D-variant. The Republic uses 60% of the E-variant and 20% each of the C- and D-variant.

I couldn't make up my mind when rendering. In the movies you never see a firetail, so picture 1, but I also tried it with firetail, picture 2. Now I can't decide which is better, which is more correct

 wow, nicely done Chris :salute and without the firetail, it makes it look like a sitting duck, dead in space, in this case, it would be nice if all of the windows were illuminated to show sign of life. With the firetail, it looks active, going to do something.

The firetail looks good and the camera angle is good too! :salute

May I suggest dimming the stars?

@Support Many Thanks. Illuminating the windows from the inside is somewhat difficult. The windows are just attached boxes. So direct behind them is the ship's hull. But I will experiment with the texture settings again. I once found a setting where the mixture of Shininess and Reflection created an effect that looked like a light was on. Unfortunately, I forgot to write down the setting. :D

@BKilburn Many thanks. I agree, I overdid it with the suns. The background was created with GIMP and I'm still gaining experience. I was really impressed by how radiant, even dazzling the viewer, you can make the picture with the supernova effect. I have overdone it. :D

Luck: I had already created a few "realistic" backgrounds.
Bad luck: The "window trick" depends on the viewing angle. And finding the right angle is tricky.

What you could do is create an emitter material in Sketchup, name it Emitter - <whatever> select all of the rectangles you want to be a light and group them, paint the group so that you have only one light, so it's fast to render. This way, you can't see inside since the rectangles are the light and it doesn't matter if they don't really light up the exterior of the ship, but I think it will give it a really nice look that there is an active crew onboard.

@Support Simple but effective idea. Why didn't I think of that? :D I like it. I'll give it a try! :salute

@Support The realization of your idea looks like this. :D Unfortunately, I forgot to save the scene in Sketchup. That's why it looks a bit different now. I positioned the second ship lower and the last ship higher. So that the flame tail of the ship in front of a ship can no longer interact so much with the ship behind it. In addition, the flame tail of the last ship is now better visible.

The lights look like paint  maybe because of the color, we expect white?

I like the new layout better Chris :salute and the dimming of the stars like Bryan suggested looks better too but I also like the fuzz you had.

@Support @BKilburn Indeed, much better! :salute

If only I could now remember the order of the layers in which I created this starry sky. I'll have to experiment a bit more. :excited:

P.S After five minutes I realized that I had always used the wrong mehtode. That's why I was no longer able to reproduce this natural starry sky.
